Shoulder injury resurfaces

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall prefaces almost every discussion about freshman Austin Reaves with the hope he stays healthy.

On Friday, Reaves got tangled up with several players and his right shoulder dislocated with 4:26 to play. He left the floor, aided by trainer Todd Fagan, and returned to the bench a few minutes later. He did not play again.

Reaves underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder in March. He had similar surgery on his right shoulder three years earlier. Marshall said the right shoulder popped out earlier this fall, limiting his practice time for several weeks. His return from this injury is unknown.

“(Fagan) said that they were able to put it back in, and I hope that that’s good,” Marshall said. “I just feel for the kid. He’s out there working really hard. He got a bad deal for shoulders.”

Price to pay

The Shockers rallied largely on the strength of reserves and newcomers in the final 11 minutes.

Their athletic ability made the press work and their scoring got the Shockers untracked. But those lineups showed their inexperience when players blew defensive assignments that gave Michigan State open threes.

“After the press, we would leave a wide-open shooter,” Marshall said. “They literally could tee it up and make a wide-open H-O-R-S-E shot. We’ve got to to do better after the press.”

Back and forth

WSU forward Darral Willis scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds and carried the inside scoring on a day when Shaq Morris played 10 minutes because of fouls.

Willis had his own foul trouble, earning a technical foul early in the second half after bumping his shoulder into Michigan State’s Mile Bridges after Bridges’ airball three-point attempt.

“I really messed up,” he said. “I was just being foolish, pretty much. I got lost in the competing and I was going a little too much. We had been competing the whole game and he was talking to me, bumping me and we were going back and forth.”

Marshall stressed in his postgame comments that technical fouls are not allowed.

All-tournament team

Wichita State's Markis McDuffie landed on the all-tournament team after averaging 11.6 points in the three games.

McDuffie made 12 of 27 shots and was the only Shocker in double figures in all three games.

Baylor's Johnathan Motley was named MVP. Louisville guards Donovan Mitchell and Quentin Snider and Michigan State's Miles Bridges completed the team.

Worth noting

WSU and Michigan State both earned $50,000 for scholarship funds for playing in the third-place game. All teams receive a $150,000 appearance fee. Baylor and Louisville earned $100,000 for playing in the champioship game. … WSU’s Daishon Smith made six straight threes over a four-game span before a first-half miss. … The Shockers out-rebounded Michigan State 37-36, 16-8 on offense. Over coach Tom Izzo’s career, the Spartans have out-rebounded 77 percent of opponents. … The Spartans extended their series lead to 6-3.
