Good timing
WSU and BYU might have more of a history than expected, given the distance between the two, and it started in a unique manner.
They played seven times before Tuesday and the Cougars had the misfortune of playing some of WSU’s best teams. In 1962 and 1964, the teams met on back-to-back nights in a home-and-home arrangement. The 1962-63 Shockers swept BYU in Provo, Utah on its way to a 19-8 record and the NIT. The 1964-65 Shockers swept games in Wichita during its first Final Four season.
The Shockers also won at BYU in 1974. In 1976, WSU won in Wichita with a team that finished 18-10.
BYU earned its first victory in the series in 1989, a 93-92 win in Provo over coach Eddie Fogler’s last team.
First-half shooter
BYU’s Matt Carlino made his first three-pointer and put his fingers to his lips to quiet Shocker fans. He made his second for a 6-2 lead.
Up 8-6, BYU ran off 11 points, five by Carlino, to build a 19-6 lead. The Shockers turned the ball over twice and missed six shots during that span.
WSU quickly moved Fred VanVleet off Carlino and put bigger Ron Baker on him. Early in the second half, Tekele Cotton guarded Carlino and Baker switched to Tyler Haws, BYU’s top scorer.
Carlino made 4 of 5 threes in the first half and scored 18 points.
Worth noting
WSU trailed by 13 in the first half. Its largest deficit previously was 10 points against William & Mary in a game the Shockers won 79-62. At halftime, officials changed a foul from Ron Baker to Nick Wiggins, giving Wiggins two and Baker one for the half.
