Carter in control

Wichita State outscored the Sycamores 30-12 in the lane with senior center Darius Carter doing much of the damage.

If it seemed familiar, it should. He scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to exceed his 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the first meeting.

“He wanted it,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “He really established himself and wanted the ball. He gave us really, really good post presence.”

Carter worked diligently to get the ball in good spots and used that positioning to score in the lane. He also made his usual 12-foot jumper and dunked twice, one on a high lob that forced him to stretch with one hand to grab and slam through the rim. Four offensive rebounds helped his totals.

“There’s a lot of openings,” he said. “It’s hard to pack the lane when I’ve got the ball because we’ve got great shooters. I see a lot of lanes to create things.”

On the guards

Wichita State’s defense has shut down Indiana State’s main source of offense in both meetings.

Leading scorer Devonte Brown went scoreless on Wednesday, missing eight shots. In WSU’s 74-57 win in Koch Arena, he went 1 for 7 and scored 10 points. Freshman guard Brenton Scott went 1 for 8 on Wednesday, scoring four points. He scored six points in the first meeting and misssed 6 of 8 shots.

The Sycamores average 8.4 three-pointers a game. In two games against WSU, they are 8 for 28 behind the arc. Nothing comes easy against Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton and Fred VanVleet.

“They’re the best guard combination in the country, and they’re really good, when you’re driving, being physical with you and taking the ball from you,” Sycamores coach Greg Lansing said. “They get into the ball, and then the deny entry passes. Sometimes you’ve got to put your head down and go make a play. Then they’ve got guys that can block shots.”

Worth noting

Wichita State extended its series lead to 55-29 and 20-18 in Hulman Center, where it won for the seventh straight time … WSU improved to 48-10 on the road since the 2010-11 season, the best mark in the nation … Wessel scored seven points and is averaging 9.0 over the past four games, double his season average. He is 12 of 25 from the floor in those games, 7 of 19 from behind the arc … Sycamores redshirt freshman Laquarius Page played the national anthem on an electric piano.
