Freshman Tyler Jones will start for Wichita State baseball Tuesday
Wichita State freshman pitcher Tyler Jones will make his college debut on Tuesday against Nebraska-Omaha.
The Shockers (3-3) started four pitchers in the first two weekends of the season and a postponement at Oral Roberts last week cost Jones his first start. Jones, a right-hander, struck out 73 and compiled a 0.15 ERA as a senior at Andale High.
WSU won two of three games last weekend against Texas State and five pitchers combined to allow 10 hits and one earned run, striking out 19, in 14-1 and 6-1 victories Friday. In a 7-5 loss Saturday, four pitchers allowed 11 hits and six earned runs.
Left fielder Tanner Dearman returned to the lineup after missing the opening series with a sprained ankle. He went 4 for 10, scored four runs and drove in eight against Texas State as the leadoff hitter.
The Shockers travel to Long Beach State this weekend for a three-game series before returning home to play 10 straight games.
Nebraska-Omaha (3-3) is the preseason favorite in the Summit League as the two-time defending champions.
