Travel problems

Weather closed the regional airport in nearby Marion, Ill., on Monday. Wichita State waited until Tuesday morning to fly to the game, arriving around 10 a.m.

The last time weather altered their plans was at Drake to open the MVC season. The Shockers, just back from a trip to Hawaii, struggled in a 66-58 win. This time, the Shockers handled the upheaval smoothly. They practiced at SIU Arena around at 12:30 p.m. and went through their normal routine of film and meal at their hotel.

“That’s not the easiest thing to do,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “We got quite a bit of rest in the hotel. It’s just a mindset that they have to get over, but they responded well.”

WSU’s sloppy effort at Drake was on the minds of the players.

“We were kind of nervous about it,” junior Ron Baker said. “We got in here, got some shots up around noon and got our legs moving. We came out that first four minutes tonight and everyone looked like they were energized.”

Back to the bench

Wichita State led by 27 points with around 10 minutes remaining when Marshall went deep into his bench. He preferred to finish the game with his starters resting, especially with guard Fred VanVleet three days removed from suffering a sprained right ankle at Illinois State.

“I had a couple walk-ons in the games with 10 minutes to go,” Marshall said. “You don’t want anybody getting hurt. We were just trying to get the game over with.”

It didn’t work out that way, due to defensive breakdowns and an ill-advised shot or two. SIU cut the lead to 73-55 with 5:22 to play and Marshall sent his starters back in.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” Marshall said. “If I’m down 18 with five-and-a-half, we’re pressing and we’re going to try to win the game. I just wanted a couple of possessions just to calm it down, maybe get a couple stops, which we couldn’t get with that other group.”

Worth noting

Wichita State freshman Zach Brown missed his fourth game with a concussion … WSU was whistled for one foul in the first half to seven for SIU. WSU’s first foul of the second half drew cheers from Salukis fans. WSU got two more fouls in the next 23 seconds, both on Darius Carter … Morris is the first Shocker reserve to lead the team in scoring since VanVleet did against Drake in 2013 … WSU improved to 47-10 on the road since the 2010-11 season … SIU leads the series 48-42, although WSU has won four in a row and seven of the past eight. SIU won 19 of 22 meetings from 1999 to 2009.
