Wichita State softball rallies to beat Texas
Wichita State’s Melanie Jaegers drove in three runs with a seventh-inning double to lift the Shockers past Texas 6-4 in the Texas Classic softball tournament in Austin on Friday.
The Shockers (5-2) trailed 4-1 entering the seventh. The first two runs scored on a hit batsman and a bases-loaded walk. Jaegers doubled to left center to give WSU a 6-4 lead.
WSU pitcher Kaitlyn Malone stranded a runner at first in the bottom of the inning. She struck out four and allowed nine hits and three earned runs. Cacy Williams went 2 for 4 and homered for WSU.
The Shockers rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Colorado State 9-6 on Friday afternoon. WSU scored four runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. In the seventh, Erin Carney singled in the tying run. Jaegers gave WSU the lead after scoring on a fielder’s choice. Williams drove in two more runs with a single.
The Shockers play Texas (4-3) at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a 6:30 game against IPFW (0-7).
