Butler softball wins NJCAA championship

Butler Community College won its first NJCAA softball championship Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Chipola (Fla.) in St. George, Utah.

Trailing 2-1, the Grizzlies (53-4) scored three runs in the fifth inning to take control. Megan Wurts’ single with two outs scored all three baserunners. Wurts finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Sophomore Jennifer Hittinger got the victory, allowing two runs – one earned – over six innings. Chipola, the defending national champion, had four hits against Hittinger.

Brynn Minor replaced Hittinger in the seventh inning with a runner on and got the final three outs, two by strikeout.

Hittinger was tournament MVP, getting victories in four of five of Butler’s tournament games.

Saturday’s clincher was Butler’s 38th straight win. Butler’s final 53-4 record was a half-game short of the 2013 team that was 54-4 but did not win the NJCAA title.
