Newman men top No. 2 seed Lubbock Christian at Heartland tourney

Newman won a Heartland Conference Tournament game for the first time, beating No. 2 seed Lubbock Christian 81-79 in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon in Tulsa.

Jalen Love broke a 75-75 with a three-pointer with 2:25 remaining, and the Jets protected the lead the rest of the way. After Lubbock Christian pulled within 79-77, Daniel Nowsu made two free throws with seven seconds left to re-establish a four-point margin.

Newman trailed by 14 late in the first half, but closed to within nine at halftime, 43-34.

Lubbock Christian started the second half with a three-pointer, but Newman chipped away and tied the score 51-51 on a three-pointer by Taylor Schreiber with 14:45 left. Newman built a 75-67 edge with 5:12 left, then went nearly three minutes without a point before Love’s three-pointer.

Love and Nowsu each scored 17 for the Jets (17-12), and Gavin Thurman and Schreiber scored 13.

The victory was the Jets’ first postseason win as an NCAA Division II member. The Jets last postseason win was March 9, 2005, in the first round of the NAIA tournament.

Newman advances to the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and will face the winner of Friday night’s game between No. 3 seed Dallas Baptist and No. 6 Texas-Permian Basin.
