Newman wins opener over Emporia State

Reggie Baker scored 19 points and led four Newman players in double figures as the Jets won their season opener 86-80 over Emporia State on Tuesday night at Newman.

James Pegues had 15 points, Luka Vermezovic 14 and Contrael Colbert 13 as Newman shot 50 percent in a game in which it never lost the lead.

Seven straight points from Baker midway through the first half helped Newman build a double-digit lead, a lead that it held through most of the second half. ESU never got within three points down the stretch.

Terrence Moore and Josh Pedersen each had 15 points to lead Emporia State (1-2). Jevon Taylor had 14 points and Perryonte Smith had 10.
