Tony Adame looks at Saturday’s small-college, junior college football games (Oct. 3)
MIAA
Washburn (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) at Fort Hays State (3-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. — It’s a season-defining game for both teams, as it’s highly unlikely a two-loss team out of the MIAA makes it to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Washburn has the hot hand after three straight wins after a season-opening loss to Lindenwood. North Dakota State transfer and junior quarterback Derek McGinnis has triggered the Ichabods’ run. The Crete, Neb., native is averaging 263.8 passing yards to go with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

No. 3 Northwest Missouri (4-0, 4-0) at Northeastern State (0-4, 0-4), 1 p.m.
Missouri Southern (1-3, 1-3) at Central Missouri (2-2, 2-2), 1:30 p.m.
Missouri Western (3-1, 3-1) at No. 15 Pittsburg State (3-1, 3-1), 2 p.m.

Jayhawk Conference
No. 2 Coffeyville (5-0, 2-0 Jayhawk) at Hutchinson (3-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. — Hutchinson went from No. 8 to out of the NJCAA Top 25 after last week’s loss to No. 17 Dodge City. Hutchinson was in the Top 25 for 24 consecutive polls and 16 straight in the Top 10. Coffeyville quarterback and Tennessee transfer Riley Ferguson is an early candidate for NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year and leads the Jayhawk with 1,686 passing yards (337.2 per game) and 20 touchdowns.

Bethel running back Preston Oliver averages 156.0 rushing yards and has scored seven touchdowns. The Threshers’ defense is third in the KCAC in scoring defense (23.3 points).
