No. 15 Pitt State rallies in second half to beat Tigers

Pittsburg State scored 17 unanswered points in the second half on the way to a come-from-behind win at previously unbeaten Fort Hays State.

Pittsburg State trailed 24-17 at halftime before storming back in the second half on a pair of 6-yard touchdown runs by freshman quarterback John Roderique Jr., including the game-winner with 5:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. All-American defensive end Heath Wilson led No. 15 Pittsburg State with two sacks on Fort Hays State’s final drive, including one for a 15-yard loss on 4th-and-10 that allowed the Gorillas to get the ball back and run out the clock.

Treveon Albert led Fort Hays State (3-1) with 248 yards of total offense and one touchdown pass.

Emporia State 55, Northeastern State 14 — Emporia State improved to 4-0 with a win over winless Northeastern State on Saturday in Emporia, the third 4-0 start for the Hornets in the last three seasons.

Emporia State scored on nine of its 11 possessions and led 42-7 at halftime. Senior quarterback Brent Wilson had another big game for Emporia State, going 12-for-18 passing for 285 yards and five touchdowns in just one half.

Washburn 27, Missouri Southern 21 —Washburn scored two touchdowns in the final 3:44 to come from behind and beat Missouri Southern in Topeka.

Washburn quarterback and North Dakota State transfer Derek McGinnis connected with Chad Williams for a 4-yard touchdown pass and the lead with 1:16 remaining.

Missouri Southern drove to the Washburn 9-yard line, but three straight incompletions sealed the Ichabods’ win, including a pass break-up by Northwest product Zach Franklin in the back of the end zone. Washburn improved to 3-1 with the win following last week’s upset at Pittsburg State.

Sterling quarterback Cedrick Phillips had his most complete game as a starter, going 5-of-10 passing for 132 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 96 yards and one touchdown.

Dodge City 27, No. 8 Hutchinson 17 — Dodge City’s Mark Thompson rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns and Dodge City’s defense forced four turnovers to pull off the upset win at Hutchinson. Dodge City (4-1, 3-0) bounced back from last week’s loss to Iowa Western and almost certainly eliminated Hutchinson (3-2, 1-2) from the Jayhawk Conference title race.

In other Jayhawk action, No. 3 Coffeyville improved to 5-0 with a 49-7 win over Iowa Central, Independence broke a 20-game losing streak with a 20-7 win over Garden City and Highland beat Fort Scott 31-25.
