No. 4 Butler stays unbeaten with win over Air Force Prep
EL DORADO — A blocked field goal attempt by Butler Community College’s DeSean Washington that was scooped up and ran 92 yards for a touchdown by Aaron Peak sparked No. 4 Butler’s 39-0 win over Air Force Prep on Saturday night.
Washington and Peak’s big play came in the first quarter, was the first touchdown for No. 4 Butler (5-0, 3-0 Jayhawk) and ignited the home crowd at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
“DeSean got a good jump off of the ball, and put his hands out and blocked it,” Peak said. “I just saw the ball in the air and decided to go follow my blockers and took it to the house.”
It was the first shutout of the season for Butler, which held Air Force Prep to 262 yards of total offense.
“It’s absolutely amazing to have your defense put up a goose egg like they did tonight,” Butler coach Tim Schaffner said. “It’s something that is very hard to come upon in this day and age ... it’s so hard to do that anymore.”
Air Force Prep (1-3) controlled time of possession, holding the ball for 15 more minutes than Butler, but the Grizzlies’ offense was sharp when called upon. Butler running back KicKobe McCrary rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.
“I give all the credit to my lineman,” McCrary said. “Without them making the holes to run through, who knows what would be happening. I just get the ball and find the holes my line has made and see what happens.”
Butler led 18-0 at halftime and went up 25-0 on a 7-yard touchdown run by McCrary on the first possession of the second half after a big kickoff return by McKinley Johnson.
“This game was especially tough to prepare for,” Schaffner said. “These guys are studying to be soldiers, they play with a soldiers mentality. They’re a very good football team and have been every year we’ve played them.”
Butler, tied for the Jayhawk Conference lead with No. 3 Coffeyville, returns to action next Saturday against Iowa Central in El Dorado.
“Iowa Central is going to be formidable as well as Air Force Prep was,” Schaffner said. “If you don’t prepare right then you never know what will happen, anyone can get beat on any given day.”
