Butler handles No. 13 Iowa Western

Butler Community College coach Tim Schaffner couldn’t ask for a better home coaching debut than he got on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies used a huge night from the defense to propel them to a 40-7 win over No. 13 Iowa Western at BG Veterans Sports Complex. It was No. 10 Butler’s first time beating the Reivers in four chances.

“It seems like a long time coming, but it’s a really good feeling,” Schaffner said. “Our guys have worked hard all year, and this is just a small piece of what we want.

“We had some goals and we had some plans, we feel if we go out and execute our plans then we’ll be ok.”

The first half was all Butler, as it took a 26-0 lead and never looked back. Butler’s Octavius Morgan intercepted three passes in the second quarter from Iowa Western quarterback Zach Martin.

He returned one 33 yards for a touchdown.

“God was with me ... coach put me in a great position to make these kind of plays, and I was just doing what I was suppose to do,” Morgan said. “When I returned that interception for a touchdown, I felt like I was a running back in high school again, and I was just off to the races.”

Butler came out of the halftime with a big strike, when Michael Gallup added his second touchdown of the game, this one a 100-yard kickoff return to start the second half. Gallup’s return added to his 14-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter from Bishop Carroll product Colton Howell.

“I caught it, took two steps and said to myself, ‘that hole is big enough for a semi truck,’ and I was just able to get through it,” Gallup said. “I just kept running down the sideline and made a tackler miss, and was in the endzone next thing I knew.”

Butler travels to Gowans Stadium next week for a key Jayhawk Conference game against No. 4 Hutchinson.

“This week’s preparation will be the same as always,” Schaffner said. “We’ll go on with it just like we did this week.”
