Tony Adame looks at Saturday’s state/juco football games (Sept. 5)
Jayhawk Conference
No. 13 Iowa Western (0-1) at No. 10 Butler (1-0), 7 p.m. – Bishop Carroll quarterback Colton Howell did a sufficient job of filling in for Oklahoma transfer Justice Hansen in the Grizzlies’ season-opening, 47-12 win over Independence. Expect Hansen to be back against the Reivers after getting a week off to let a nagging leg injury heal, and expect the 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore to join the growing number of elite starting quarterbacks in the Jayhawk. Iowa Western gets back-to-back top-10 games to open the season after losing to No. 6 Coffeyville last Saturday in overtime.
Other games
Iowa Central at Independence (0-1), 11 a.m.
No. 6 Coffeyville (1-0) at Ellsworth (1-0), 7 p.m.
No. 4 Hutchinson (1-0, 0-0 Jayhawk) at Fort Scott (1-0, 0-0), 7 p.m.
Dodge City (1-0, 0-0) at Garden City (1-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.
KCAC
No. 12 Northwestern (0-0) at No. 22 Tabor (1-0), 7 p.m. – The only game in the KCAC-GPAC series between ranked teams sees the Bluejays picking up where they left off the last couple of years – dominating on the ground. Tabor rushed for 327 yards in last week’s season-opening win at Lyons, with a pair of 100-yard rushers in Joseph Donnell and D’Marco Smith and all six touchdowns coming on the ground. Northwestern has a pair of preseason All-Americans on defense with senior defensive end Lawton DeJong and senior defensive back Justin Wohlert, who led the nation with 22 pass breakups last season.
