State colleges/junior colleges: Pitt State takes down No. 1 Northwest Missouri
Pittsburg State raced out to a 28-0 lead in the first half on the way to a shocking, 35-17 upset of undefeated, No. 1 Northwest Missouri on Saturday in front of a school-record 11,002 fans in Maryville, Mo.
The loss snapped a 21-game winning streak for the NCAA Division II defending national champion Bearcats.
Pittsburg State overcame three interceptions from senior quarterback Anthony Abenoja, who was 19-of-38 passing for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Abenoja hooked up with a pair of wide receivers for big days in Gavin Lutman (134 yards, one touchdown) and Marquise Cushon (105 yards, one touchdown).
Linebacker Colby Hall led the Gorillas’ defense with a career-high 18 tackles, one sack and one interception. Pittsburg State (6-1) moved into a tie for first place with Northwest Missouri (6-1) in the MIAA standings.

Friends 14, No. 10 Tabor 11 — Friends picked up its biggest win in years, taking down the ranked Bluejays in Hillsboro behind two touchdown passes from Andover product Aaron Hansen.
Tabor had a chance to win or tie, getting the ball back at its own 14-yard line with two minutes left before Carlos Cox sealed the win for Friends with an interception at the Tabor 40, allowing Hansen to take a knee for the win. Southeast product Sequente Marks also had an interception for Friends.
The win pushed Friends (5-2, 4-1 KCAC) into a tie for first place in the KCAC with Ottawa.
