Brian Barone takes Butler coaching job

Butler Community College announced the hiring of Brian Barone as men’s basketball coach.

Barone spent the past five seasons as an assistant to coach Brian Wardle at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before that he was director of basketball operations at both Indiana and Marquette. He began his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant at Central Florida Community College, then spent one season at Garden City Community College and four seasons at Illinois State.

He played two seasons at Texas A&M for his father, Tony Barone, then completed his career at Marquette, where he was teammates with former Butler coach Mike Bargen. Bargen left Butler in late April to take a job as an assistant to Wardle at his new job at Bradley.

“We are excited to have a coach of Barone’s stature to lead our men’s basketball program and continue to the success we experienced under Mike Bargen,” Butler athletic director Todd Carter said in a statement. “We were looking for a coach who is known nationally and has a proven track record of success. We also wanted a coach with integrity and who will do a fine job of mentoring the young men in our program. We believe we have found all of that in Brian Barone.”
