Saturday’s Kansas small-college football games (Oct. 4)
MIAA
Fort Hays State (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) at Washburn (1-3, 1-3), 1 p.m. — The Tigers pulled off the biggest upset of the MIAA season last Saturday with a 7-6 win at No. 9 Pittsburg State — Fort Hays State’s first win over the Gorillas since 1978. Now, the Tigers have a real shot at pulling off a Sunflower sweep — they get a shot at struggling Washburn on Saturday, then are at Emporia State on Oct. 18 and the Hornets will likely be without All-MIAA quarterback Brent Wilson, who broke his collarbone in last week’s win at Northeastern State.
Carroll product Zeke Palmer takes over as the starting quarterback for Washburn after coach Craig Schurig pulled Palmer’s redshirt in last week’s 42-21 loss at Missouri Southern. Palmer was 27 of 47 passing for 328 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Other games
Northeastern State (0-4, 0-4) at No. 1 Northwest Missouri (4-0, 4-0), 1 p.m.
Central Oklahoma (3-1, 3-1) at Nebraska-Kearney (0-4, 0-4), 2 p.m.
Central Missouri (2-2, 2-2) at Missouri Southern (2-2, 2-2), 2 p.m.
Lindenwood (1-3, 1-3) at Emporia State (2-2, 2-2), 2 p.m.
No. 19 Pittsburg State (3-1, 3-1) at Missouri Western (2-2, 2-2), 6 p.m.
Jayhawk
No. 5 Hutchinson (5-0, 3-0 Jayhawk) at No. 14 Coffeyville (4-1, 2-0), 7 p.m. — Hutchinson has one of the more dominant defensive linemen in recent Jayhawk history in 6-foot-4, 278-pound defensive end Marquavius Lewis, a South Carolina commit and the reigning NJCAA national defensive player of the week.
Lewis had 3.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks in last week’s 43-26 win at Dodge City. He leads the Blue Dragons with 12 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and is second on the team with 36 tackles.
Other games
No. 15 Butler (3-2) at Iowa Central (2-3), noon

KCAC
Bethel (2-2, 1-1 KCAC) at Saint Mary (1-3, 1-1), 1:30 p.m. — The Threshers have been the surprise story of the KCAC thus far, and are one victory away from matching their highest win total since going 3-7 in 2009. Senior quarterback David Bronson, a Northern Heights product, has been the rock for Bethel — he’s thrown for 573 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for another. More importantly, Bronson is protecting the ball, throwing one interception through the first four games.
