NJCAA men’s golf: Hutchinson’s Chase Coble snares first-round lead at Sand Creek Station
Jayhawk Conference golfers hold two of the top four spots after one round of the NJCAA Division I men’s golf tournament at Sand Creek Station in Newton.
Chase Coble, from Hutchinson Community College, used a 3-under first nine holes to finish at 3-under 69 for the first-round lead. Back-to-back birdies on his sixth and seventh holes (Nos. 15 and 16) helped him to a one-shot lead over Dodge City’s Ben Maskus, Cooper Brown of Wallace State and P.J. Shields of Faulkner State.
Maskus rebounded from a 1-over front nine to birdie 11, 16 and 18 on the back nine for a 2-under 70.
Wallace State and Indian Hills each shot a four-man total of 289, 1 over on the par-72 course. Eastern Florida State is one shot back, followed four shots back by Hutchinson. Dodge City is at 296.
The tournament continues Wednesday through Friday with 18 holes each day.
