Tabor women upset No. 7 seed in NAIA Division II tournament; Friends men lose

Tonisha Dean scored 15 points and hit the go-ahead shot late in the game that helped Tabor upset No. 7-seed Marian (Ind.) 53-50 in the opening game of the NAIA Division II Tournament on Wednesday morning in Sioux City, Iowa.

Tabor, champions of the KCAC, had a double-digit lead through much of the second half before Marian rallied to tie the game at 49 with less than a minute to play. But Dean’s shot in the lane with 26 seconds to go gave the Bluejays the lead for good. Dean followed with two free throws on the next possession.

Tabor held Marian to 34.7-percent shooting. Standout guard Lakan Hasser-Smith was held to eight points on 3-for-10 shooting. Marian entered the game averaging 78 points.

Tena Loewen had 12 poitns and Kaleigh Troxell added nine for Tabor (20-12), which will play at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the second round against third-seeded Southern Oregon or sixth-seeded Robert Morris (Ill.).

Friends men fall — No. 2 seed Embry-Riddle beat Friends 76-47 on the opening day of the NAIA DIvision II men’s tournament in Point Lookout, Mo., ending the Falcons’ season.

Embry-Riddle used a 17-6 run at the end of the first half to go up 38-21 at halftime. The Falcons never got closer than 18 points during the game’s final 15 minutes.

Toby Baxter led Friends with 13 points.
