Butler, Hutch men survive OT scares
Butler and Hutchinson survived in overtime Thursday night to earn berths in the semifinals of the Region VI men’s tournament at Koch Arena.
Butler, an 87-77 winner over Seward, and Hutch, a 94-88 winner over Coffeyville, will battle Friday night in one semifnal and Dodge City and Pratt will tangle in the other semi. Dodge City defeated Cloud 81-62 and Pratt downed Allen 84-72.
Chris Howell hit two free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining in regulation to enable Butler to send the game to overtime.
Howell finished with 24 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to pace the Grizzles (29-2).
Butler had defeated Seward by 19 points on Feb. 21.
DeShawn Freeman scored 37 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to spark Hutch, which shot 51 free throws, hitting 29. Darrion Strong’s 29 points led Coffeyville.
Pratt’s Trevon Evans and Kyndall Powell each scored 15 points to offset a 34-point, eight-rebound showing by Allen’s Courtney Stockard.
E. J. Eaves scored 21 points to help Dodge City defeat Cloud, which was led in scoring by Demonte Ojinnaka’s 17.
