A lineup tweak
Kansas coach Bill Self tweaked his starting lineup Tuesday at Texas Tech, inserting freshman forward Cliff Alexander in place of junior Jamari Traylor. It was Alexander’s second start of the season. He also started in a road loss at Temple on Dec. 22.
Traylor, who entered Tuesday averaging 5 points and 3.2 rebounds, had started 12 straight games, including all 10 previous Big 12 games.
Alexander, meanwhile, appeared poised for a breakout after some strong performances during the non-conference season. But he had struggled in recent weeks, averaging just 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in his last four games. For the season, though, Alexander’s numbers eclipsed Traylor’s in fewer minutes. A consensus top-five recruit, Alexander entered Tuesday averaging 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds while playing averagin 18.4 minutes.
On Tuesday, Alexander finished with 10 points while shooting four of five from the floor. He also finished with four blocks.
Alexander was in the lineup alongside Kansas’ usual starters: Sophomore guards Frank Mason and Wayne Selden, freshman wing Kelly Oubre and junior forward Perry Ellis.
