Source: A&M assistant Gary Hyman joins Kansas football staff

LAWRENCE — David Beaty’s Kansas football staff is nearly complete.

In the latest move, Beaty hired former Texas A&M staff member Gary Hyman to be the Jayhawks’ new special teams coordinator and tight ends coach, a source with knowledge of the hiring confirmed Tuesday.

Hyman spent last season as a special teams quality-control coach at Texas A&M, where Beaty served as receivers coach. He becomes the eighth full-time assistant hired at Kansas since Beaty became the Jayhawks’ new coach in early December. Hyman, who was a standout receiver at Humboldt State in Arcada, Calif., from 1994-96, also spent time in recent years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southern Cal and a graduate assistant at UTEP.

Beaty has already announced the hires of seven full-time assistant coaches and a strength and conditioning coach, including the addition of new offensive coordinator Rob Likens, a former receivers coach at Cal. Among the hirings: former Kansas assistant coach Je’Ney Jackson will serve as the head strength and conditioning coach, while former KU linebacker and Northern Illinois assistant Kevin Kane will coach linebackers. Beaty also added former Tulsa assistant Calvin Thibodeaux as the defensive line coach, former Vikings staffer Klint Kubiak as receivers coach, and former Cal assistant Zach Yenser as offensive line coach. Those additions came after Beaty decided to retain former interim coach Clint Bowen as defensive coordinator and running backs coach Reggie Mitchell in the same position.
