Greene troubles

Kansas coach Bill Self answered one question midway through the first half Saturday, inserting junior wing Brannen Greene into the game.

The substitution came just three days after Self ripped Greene for his sportsmanship after dunking at the buzzer in a victory over K-State.

On Saturday, though, Self sent Greene into the game in the first half — before pulling him a minute later for a defensive lapse. Greene, who failed to guard a screen correctly, did not return to the floor. After the game, Self said Greene told an assistant coach that he was “too tight” to play in the final minutes of a blowout.

“He said he was too tight or whatever, couldn’t go back (in the game),” Self said. “That’s what he told one of the assistant coaches. We talk about how we’re going to guard certain actions, and obviously we didn’t come close to guarding it right. He wasn’t the only one. Svi (Mykhailiuk) did the same thing.”

With Greene’s minutes sparse and junior Wayne Selden slowed by illness, Mykhailiuk played 24 minutes, his most since playing 25 minutes against Harvard on Dec. 5.

Getting bigger

Freshmen big men Cheick Diallo and Carlton Bragg played 10 minutes apiece. Diallo had two points, five rebounds and two turnovers; Bragg went scoreless with five boards.

“I thought they both did fine,” Self said. “I thought Jamari (Traylor) was by far our next big, next to Perry (Ellis). I thought they both did fine. Both were pretty active. I thought Carlton was good on the glass. I thought Cheick did some good things.”
