Greene sits
Kansas coach Bill Self didn’t want to make a big deal out of the fact that sophomore Brannen Greene didn’t play in the first half Saturday after being late to an afternoon weights session on Friday. But Greene’s tardiness did open up a starting spot for freshman Kelly Oubre, who finished with a career-high 23 points.
“(Brannen) came to me and said, ‘Coach, I screwed up, I screwed up,’” Self said. “He handled it well.”
Self said that there would be no further punishment and added that he would refrain from announcing starters before games for the rest of the season.
“It’s not the end of the earth,” Self said.
On Friday, Self had also stated that Cliff Alexander would make his first career start against Lafayette. But after Alexander had a lackluster practice on Friday, Self changed his mind and started sophomore Landen Lucas instead.
Worth noting
Junior forward Perry Ellis played just 14 minutes while battling through some kind of illness that left him feeling a little lethargic and dehydrated. Ellis, who was averaging more than 14 points, finished with four points against Lafayette. “I didn’t have much energy this game,” Ellis said. “I got real tired fast, and I just got to make sure I’m getting more fluids.”… The Jayhawks’ eight-game winning streak is the program’s longest since an 18-game winning streak during the 2012-13 season.… KU freshman Svi Mykhailiuk had three three-pointers in the first half.
