Jayhawk report: OU 62, KU 7
First quarter
Key play: The Sooners sprinted to their first score on a Baker Mayfield 68-yard touchdown throw to Joe Dixon out of the backfield. Dixon was wide open on the play and then ran past the Jayhawks for an easy score.
Key stat: Mayfield had 173 passing yards. The Oklahoma quarterback only had one incompletion and managed three touchdowns in the quarter.
Second quarter
Key play: Ryan Willis gave the lone highlight for Kansas in the first half. Willis hit Tyler Patrick on a 17-yard out route that he walked in for the score. At the time it was 21-7, which meant the Jayhawks were in the game.
Key stat: Sterling Shepard put up 174 receiving yards in the first half. Shepard continues to show why he is one of the best route runners and receivers in the conference.
Third quarter
Key play: Dorance Armstrong sacked Trevor Knight, stopping another touchdown to happen to the KU defense. Armstrong had two total sacks, making for a defensive highlight.
Key stat: The Sooners scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to open up the game even more.
Fourth quarter
Key play: Knight connected with his twin brother Connor Knight on a 17-yard TD pass.
Key stat: Five sacks. That’s how many Willis and the offensive line gave up.
Report card
Offense: D. With no rhythm by the Kansas offense, it was hard to judge the Jayhawks. They made some nice plays, but nothing to sustain drives. Another freshman, Tyler Patrick, emerged as a potential target for Willis. Still there was not enough consistency to show productivity.
Defense: D. The Jayhawks could not slow down the Sooners offense. Mayfield balanced with Samaje Pernie made for a nice balance of attack.
Special teams: C. The Jayhawks recovered a fumble on a punt return by the Sooners. They also had a decent day of punting by Matt Wyman, who is still transitioning from kicker to punter. Nothing spectacular from Kansas, but they did not hurt themselves.
Coaching: D. After going into halftime 38-7, David Beaty and his staff were unable to change the tide of the game. The offense especially has to be disappointed with one touchdown.
Player of the game: Sterling Shepard can run many routes, which helps Mayfield when he gets into trouble. He gave the KU secondary fits with his crisp attack of the ball and its coverage.
Reason to hope: There are many young players getting experience for KU. The Jayhawks started six freshman on offense and show a lot of youth on defense as well.
Reason to mope: The Jayhawks cannot seem to get anything going on offense.
Looking ahead: Kansas goes on the road to Texas next weekend. The Jayhawks will try to break a 33-game road losing streak when they travel to Austin. The game starts at 7 p.m. on Cox 22 and the Longhorn Network.
