Taylen “Tay” Kinney, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound high school senior point guard from the Overtime Elite program in Atlanta, will be making an official campus visit to Kansas on Friday through Sunday, a source close to his recruitment confirmed to The Star on Thursday.
Kinney, who is ranked No. 12 in the recruiting class of 2026 by 247Sports, No. 17 by ESPN and No. 22 by Rivals, on Thursday told Rivals he’d narrowed his list of schools to KU, Kentucky, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisville, Miami, Oregon and Texas.
The Newport, Kentucky native has visited Louisville and Kentucky and has also planned visits to Indiana, Oregon, Texas and Arkansas. Earlier he considered Auburn, Purdue, Xavier and Tennessee.
“Bill Self is a great coach. He’s got a national championship (actually two, 2008 and 2022). I really want to see what they do with DP (Darryn Peterson) this year. But I think he will do well. I think it’s a good program,” Kinney told Rivals.
Kinney averaged 19.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game during the 2024-25 Overtime Elite season. He averaged 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists on this summer’s Adidas 3SSB travel circuit, hitting 49.5% of his shots and 28.6% of his 3s.
He averaged 22 points, 6.3 assists and 5 rebounds per game at the recent NBPA Top 100 camp, earning him first-team honors.
Jamie Shaw of On3.com, who scouted the Top 100 camp, wrote: “Tay Kinney brought the fire all weekend and he provided some impressive highlights throughout his four games. The two key factors for Kinney’s game were his handle and his shooting range.
“He has a slippery handle. He was able to consistently get into the paint and collapse a defense. He showed an array of counter dribbles and step back footwork to find open space to get clean looks. And the shooting was consistent. Throughout the week, Kinney knocked down shots off the catch and off movement. He was both efficient and confident. He will need to continue getting stronger, which should help him become more of a presence on defense, and take better care of possessions, but his talent was undeniable in flashes at the NBPA Top 100 Camp.”
Asked what he’s looking for in a school, Kinney told thedailyhoosier.com: “A great relationship with the coaching staff and a school that I can fit in. Just a team that fits my style of play. I’m going to have the ball in my hands and a great opportunity to get to the league.”
KU freshmen Samis Calderon, Kohl Rosario and Bryson Tiller all are graduates of the Overtime Elite program.
Kinney is included in “One Shot: Overtime Elite,” a series on Amazon Prime. The trailer can be viewed on YouTube.
