This former Kansas player will join Bill Self’s staff as he rehabs from injury
Former Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball player KJ Adams continues to recover from an Achilles injury. He’s out of college eligibility now, but his rehabilitation will continue alongside players on KU’s 2025-26 roster.
Adams, head coach Bill Self said, will be joining his staff of assistants in some capacity.
“KJ’s going to be part of our staff next year,” Self said. ”And whatever capacity that is, I don’t know from a title standpoint yet. But whatever it is, (it will) allow him to stick around, be at practice every day and also work on rehab.”
Adams suffered the injury late in KU’s first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Arkansas. He continues to make progress on his rehab, Self said.
“He went home and he’s not coming back until next week,” Self said. “He’s doing fine. I think he’s in a boot and has like one or two more weeks in a boot. But the doctors say he’s progressing great. It’s still going to be a year before he’s able to do too much.”
Adams won’t the only newcomer on the Jayhawks’ coaching staff next season. He joins new assistant coach Jacque Vaughn, who replaced Norm Roberts, who retired.
Also, Lexi Price has been promoted to replace Fred Quartlebaum as director of basketball operations.
Adams played in 137 games with 97 starts in his four seasons at Kansas, which concluded in 2024-25. He averaged 9.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in his senior year.
He also won several awards during his tenure as a player at KU. He was an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection after the 2023-24 season and won the Big 12’s most improved player award in 2023.
