Former KU Jayhawks wing Rakease Passmore chooses his transfer destination

Former Kansas men’s basketball shooting guard Rakease Passmore, a seldom-used 6-foot-5 native of Palatka, Florida, who was ranked No. 42 in the recruiting class of 2024 by Rivals, has decided to transfer to Maryland, he announced Friday.

A sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining, Passmore will join former KU guard David “Diggy” Coit, who announced his transfer to Maryland on April 8.

Maryland coach Buzz Williams has added 10 players from the portal and 12 players total to the Terrapin roster this offseason.

Passmore averaged 5.0 minutes per game in 23 games during his freshman year at KU. He scored 17 points as a Jayhawk. In all, five KU players on the 2024-25 roster have chosen new schools. Forward Zach Clemence and guard Rylan Griffen chose Texas A&M and wing AJ Storr selected Mississippi.

Passmore was a four-star recruit out of Combine Academy in Lincolnton, North Carolina. As a senior he averaged 19.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Passmore played his AAU basketball on the Nike EYBL circuit where he was a teammate of Alabama guard and former KU signee Labaron Philon, who is expected to keep his name in the NBA Draft. Passmore averaged 13.6 points and 4.2 rebounds a game for Team Thad at the 2024 Nike Peach Jam.

Initially he chose KU over Auburn, Houston, Illinois, Indiana, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M and others.

At Maryland he will join a backcourt that includes four transfers and two incoming freshman: guards Darius Adams and Guillermo Del Pino.
