Former KU men’s basketball guard Rylan Griffen announces transfer to SEC school

Former Kansas Jayhawks senior guard Rylan Griffen, who played two seasons at Alabama and this past one at KU, has decided to finish his college basketball career in his home state of Texas.

Griffen, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound Dallas native who entered the NCAA transfer portal on April 1, has chosen Texas A&M as his transfer destination. He revealed his college choice Friday to Joe Tipton of On3.com.

Alabama, Kentucky and Miami were also in the mix.

At A&M, Griffen will be reunited with junior-to-be Zach Clemence, who on April 14 announced his own transfer from KU to the Aggies. Griffen has one year of eligibility remaining, Clemence two.

Griffen last season averaged 6.3 points a game on 37.2% shooting while starting 20 of 33 games for KU (21-13). He hit 37.2% of his shots, including 33.6% of his 3s (41-of-122). He hit 67.5% of his free throws and contributed 2.1 rebounds per contest. He had 46 assists to 30 turnovers.

As a sophomore at Alabama, Griffen averaged 11.2 points and 3.4 rebounds with a 39.2% 3-point shooting percentage.

Griffen is the fifth KU player with remaining eligibility to leave KU via the portal. David Coit is headed to Maryland and AJ Storr to Mississippi while Rakease Passmore has yet to announce his college choice. Zeke Mayo, who is working out in advance of the 2025 NBA Draft, has also entered the portal in case a judge grants a fifth-year of eligibility to seniors who competed in 2024-25.

KU has added three players from the portal thus far: Jayden Dawson (Loyola-Chicago), Tre White (Illinois) and Melvin Council Jr. (St. Bonaventure).

KU has four remaining scholarships to award in its recruiting class of 2025. A&M, which has a first-year coach in Bucky McMillan, has also Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana), Duke Miles (Oklahoma), Marcus Hill (NC. State), Jamie Vinson (Texas), Josh Holloway (Samford), and Jacari Lane (North Alabama).
