Allen Fieldhouse will serve as host venue for more than men’s and women’s hoops

Next season, for the first time since 2013, the Kansas Jayhawks volleyball team will play a match inside historic Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks, under the direction of first-year coach Matt Ulmer, will play host to Kansas State on Friday, Oct. 24, in the 15,300-seat basketball venue. The news was announced Monday as part of the Big 12 Conference’s schedule release.

KU’s regular home, Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, has a capacity of 2,265.

KU’s last home match in Allen Fieldhouse was a victory over Creighton in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks also played one regular-season match in 2013 at Allen Fieldhouse (vs. Denver) as well as one regular-season match and two in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

“The fan support for Kansas volleyball continues to grow,” Ulmer said in a news release. “We are thankful that Kansas State has agreed to compete with us in Allen Fieldhouse to showcase just how large that support is. There’s no doubt in my mind that we can let the country know that Kansas volleyball is looking to compete at an elite level in every way.”

KU volleyball played its home matches at Allen Fieldhouse from 1975-98 before moving into Horejsi Center in 1999. That facility was renovated and unveiled as Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena on Sept. 10, 2019.

Prior to moving, the volleyball attendance record in Allen Fieldhouse was 14,800 for a match against Missouri on Oct 18, 1996. The largest crowd since then was 4,478 for the NCAA first-round match versus Wichita State on Dec. 1, 2012.

KU will play an 18-match Big 12 schedule this coming season, opening Sept. 26 against Arizona State. KU also will play host to Arizona, Texas Tech, Iowa State, TCU, Colorado, Cincinnati and UCF at Horejsi.

On the road, KU will meet TCU, Baylor, Houston, Kansas State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Utah, BYU and Iowa State.

Of the Jayhawks’ 15 conference opponents, KU will play home-and-home series against TCU, Iowa State, Kansas State and Cincinnati.
