KU Jayhawks, 3 other hoops teams make St. Bonaventure guard’s list of finalists
Melvin Council Jr., a 6-foot-4, 185-pound pound senior-to-be combo guard from St. Bonaventure, has narrowed his list of transfer possibilities.
And Kansas is among the basketball standout’s final four.
Council’s list of finalists, as he told several recruiting services Wednesday, includes KU, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Mississippi State.
A native of Rochester, New York, Council on Tuesday told The Star that he would be making a recruiting visit to KU in the near future. He did not provide any set dates for meeting with Jayhawks head coach Bill Self and his staff.
Council recently was named third-team all-Atlantic 10 after averaging 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game during the 2024-25 season. He led the A-10 in steals, with 72, and scored in double-figures in every A-10 game — not to mention the season’s final 22 contests overall.
Council averaged 37 minutes per game and actually was on the floor for 92.5% of all possible minutes for the Bonnies, who finished the season with a 22-12 record.
Council hit 199 of 457 shots last season (43.5%). He was 40-of-134 from 3-point range (29.9%) and 59-of-72 from the free-throw line (81.9%). Council, who had 139 assists to 59 turnovers, scored in double-figures 29 times in 2024-25.
He scored 24 points versus Fordham and 20 against Duquesne. And he was 4-of-7 from 3-point range in a game against Niagara.
Council entered the transfer portal on March 28. He told Jayhawkslant.com he’s had two Zoom calls with KU this week.
So far this offseason, Kansas has corralled two players from the portal: Jayden Dawson, a 6-4 senior from Loyola-Chicago, and Tre White, a 6-7 senior from Illinois.
KU players with eligibility remaining who have entered the portal include David “Diggy” Coit; Rakease Passmore; AJ Storr; Zach Clemence; and Rylan Griffen.
Coit announced his transfer to Maryland on Tuesday.
