Darryn Peterson’s high school season comes to an end. How did he play in finale?
Future Kansas basketball guard Darryn Peterson scored a game-high 24 points on chilly 9-of-27 shooting (4-of-14 from 3) in Prolific Prep’s 83-64 loss to Dynamic Prep of Texas in the semifinals of the Chipotle Nationals on Friday in Fishers, Indiana.
Prolific Prep, a team based in Napa, California, finished the season with a 35-6 record.
Dynamic Prep power forward Chris Nwuli, who is headed to Rutgers, scored 20 points with six rebounds for the winning Texas team. Future SMU big man Jaden Toombs had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Future Oral Roberts guard Leroy Kelly scored 10 points with eight rebounds and six assists.
Peterson, a 6-foot-5 native of Canton, Ohio, contributed seven rebounds with three assists and two blocked shots in Friday’s season-ending loss. He had scored 28 points with 12 rebounds and eight assists in Thursday’s 81-80 overtime win over Long Island (New York) Lutheran in the quarterfinals.
“Darryn left it all on the court in his last high school game,” wrote the SportsCenter NEXT social media X account.
Peterson, who is ranked No. 2 in the recruiting class of 2025 according to ESPN, had 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals and earned co-MVP honors in Tuesday’s McDonald’s All-America game in Brooklyn, New York. For the year he averaged 30.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game for Prolific Prep.
Of Peterson’s performance in the McDonald’s game, thesportingtribune.com wrote: “Co-game MVP Darryn Peterson, 18, is an explosive, yet smooth guard with a clean and confident jump shot to go with highlight-producing hops. The Kansas commit also has a history of production; for instance, he scored 58 points in February to lead his school past Utah Prep, led by another No. 1 pick contender in AJ Dybantsa..”
Jonathan GIvony of ESPN.com wrote: “Darryn Peterson looked like the best prospect in high school basketball at the McDonald’s All-America game, dropping 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 24 minutes. The Kansas-bound combo is a two-way guard with tremendous shot-creation and shot-making prowess.”
Dynamic Prep will meet Columbus (Florida) in Saturday’s national tourney final.
According to the Chipotle Nationals website: “The National High School Invitational (NHSI) was created in 2009 by Paragon Marketing Group to provide a platform for the top, nationally ranked high school basketball teams in the country to compete against one another in a season-ending tournament. Over the course of 15 years, this event ... has crowned the best high school basketball teams in the country. In 2024, the event moved to Indiana and became the Chipotle High School Basketball Nationals.”
