Kansas Jayhawks Q&A on Lance Leipold’s contract, Mello Dotson and the KU-vs.-KSU game

It’s a busy time right now if you are a Kansas Jayhawks fan.

KU basketball opened its season in dominant fashion with a 99-56 home win over North Carolina Central on Monday. And the Jayhawks were to play their second game Friday vs. Manhattan College.

While KU football continues to have its best season in over a decade. The Jayhawks clinched their first winning season since 2008 with a 28-21 win over Iowa State.

Kansas will look to extend its winning streak to three against Big 12 foe Texas Tech on Saturday.

Let’s jump into another Kansas Jayhawks Q&A. As always, thank you for the questions!

I wouldn’t be surprised if coach Lance Leipold receives a contract extension with a significant pay bump after the season.

But there’s no scenario in which I see him making more than Bill Self. And that’s said with no disrespect to Leipold — Self is an institution at KU, with multiple championships to his credit.

The only hope for that, I think, is getting ESPN’s College Gameday to pay a visit. That could help shift the start time.

I’d be very surprised if KU guard Michael Jankovich becomes a rotation player. That probably means Self is dealing with multiple injuries, or something’s gone wrong with KU’s other guards.

I’d be more inclined to believe that the Jayhawks add someone mid-season.

Dotson exited Saturday’s game against Iowa State with an injury.

Here’s what Leipold had to say about Dotson on Monday.

“Mello is doing better — game status, I don’t know,” Leipold said. “He’s doing a lot better than we even anticipated even before we even left the stadium.”

I’m not sure it’s in the works, but it’s likely something Self and his staff are looking into.

If Johnny Furphy is as successful as anticipated, that could open the door for a bigger focus on international scouting.
