KU hoops legend Sherron Collins named boys basketball coach at Oak Park High School
Former University of Kansas men’s basketball point guard Sherron Collins has been named varsity boys basketball coach at Oak Park High School pending board approval, both Collins and an Oak Park High official confirmed to The Star on Monday night.
Collins, a key contributor on KU’s 2008 NCAA title team, coached Lawrence Free State to an 11-10 record last season — his one and only season as the Firebirds’ boys hoops coach.
“Welcome to the @Northmen_OPHS Family! Men’s head basketball coach Sherron Collins. Very excited to watch him get to work. @Northmen_MBB,” Oak Park High activities director Chad Valadez wrote Monday night on Twitter.
“Excited to be the new head coach at Oak park high school!!! ... let’s get to work!!!” Collins, who was introduced to Oak Park hoops team members on Monday, wrote on Twitter.
Collins, 36, is a 2006 graduate of Crane High School in Chicago. He graduated from KU with a Liberal Arts degree in 2010.
Collins on Monday night also wrote on Twitter: “I want to thank @ADShawLawFS and the entire Free State Admin for giving me my first head coaching opportunity as well as their support! I also want to thank to my players and their families for trusting in our staff and vision! Thank you Free State community for the support & love.”
Collins, a two-time first-team all-Big 12 player, had his jersey hung in the Allen Fieldhouse rafters in 2018. In 2017, after retiring from basketball, he started his coaching career. He worked as a coach for Team Kansas City Basketball (AAU), which changed its name to Phenom Boys Basketball.
At Oak Park, Collins takes over for Brennan Scanlon, who led the team to a 27-2 record last season.
Former KU standout Ochai Agbaji, who just completed his rookie season with the NBA’s Utah Jazz, is a graduate of Oak Park High.
