There will be no co-champs in Big 12 basketball: KU takes undisputed title Wednesday
Kansas is the undisputed Big 12 Conference men’s basketball champion for the 2022-23 season.
The No. 3-ranked Jayhawks, who clinched at least a share of the program’s NCAA-best 64th all-time regular-season league title by beating Texas Tech 67-63 on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse, won the crown outright Wednesday night thanks to TCU’s 75-73 win over Texas in Fort Worth, Texas.
The No. 9-ranked Longhorns fell to 11-6, two games behind (13-4) KU with one game to play.
Texas was the only league team with a shot at tying KU entering Wednesday’s conference action.
KU’s regular-season finale at Texas (3 p.m., Saturday, Moody Center, Austin, Texas) now will have no bearing on the league title race.
KU has won 17 of 20 regular-season Big 12 titles in the 20-year Bill Self era. KU has won 13 or more conference games for the 16th time under Self.
The Big 12 standings look like this with one game remaining for all teams. KU (13-4), Kansas State, Texas and Baylor (11-6), TCU (9-8), Iowa State (8-9), Oklahoma State (7-10), West Virginia (6-11), Texas Tech (5-12) and Oklahoma (4-13).
As No. 1 seed in next week’s Big 12 tournament, the Jayhawks will meet the winner of Wednesday’s game between the No. 8-9 seeds in a league quarterfinal approximately 2 p.m., Thursday (March 9) at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. If KU wins it would advance to the 6 p.m. semifinal on March 10. The title game is 5 p.m., March 11.
