Kansas junior quarterback Jalon Daniels, who had missed the last 4 1/2 football games because of a right-shoulder injury, did not suffer any setbacks during Saturday’s 55-14 loss to Texas at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

“Right now, he went through everything today,” KU coach Lance Leipold said after Monday’s practice. Daniels not only played on Saturday, he took a big hit on one play that upset KU’s coach.

“Jason practiced as well,” Leipold added of senior backup QB Jason Bean. “It’s the first time I think they both really fully practiced in a while and hopefully that will continue through the week. It’s really, truly how they come through the morning (practices) so to speak.”

Daniels completed 17 of 26 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the blowout loss to the Longhorns. Bean, who took over in the fourth quarter, completed 1 of 3 passes for 12 yards. Bean did not have a rushing attempt; Daniels ran two times for 12 yards.

Bean had taken hits to the midsection that had provided discomfort near the end of recent games against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

“On Jalon there was a little bit of rustiness,” Leipold said. “He had to work through some things. He did not want to come out of the game. I talked to him in the third quarter about taking him out. He said, ‘I need to work some rust off. I want to stay in.’ He could have easily said, ‘OK I’ll wait and see what happens,’ (but) he wanted to keep going. I told Jason he was going to get time in the fourth quarter.

“It’s the way it played out again. I thought (Daniels) made some throws that were impressive as the game went on. He gained more confidence.”

KU (6-5, 3-5) will meet Kansas State (8-3, 6-2) at 7 p.m., Saturday, in Manhattan in the regular-season finale for both teams.

“Obviously we were very disappointed,” Leipold said of KU’s play vs. Texas. “We just finished practice here about a half hour ago. It was one of our best Monday practices we’ve had in a long time. Just the way they went about it, moved around, We talked about a lot of different things, how things went Saturday that we’ve got to better at.

Of the loss to Texas, second-year KU coach Leipold added: “Obviously we didn’t play well. We didn’t handle some situations real well. To me it’s just a part of the whole growth process in building a consistent program. And by no means did we ever think we were there, OK? We had made great progress and there are going to be days you take a step back. Unfortunately we did this past weekend and we’re going to put it back where it needs to be.”
