Kansas Jayhawks’ Mitch Lightfoot listed ‘day-to-day’ entering NCAA Tournament

Kansas senior Mitch Lightfoot “had a good day today in rehab,” KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self said Sunday in providing an injury update on the 6-foot-8 power forward who sprained his left knee in the second half of Saturday’s 74-65 victory over Texas Tech in the finals of the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center.

Self said Lightfoot was listed as “day-to-day” as preparation for the NCAA Tournament begins.

“Mitch is playing the best ball maybe of his career right now,” Self said Sunday. “I know he will do everything humanly possible to put himself in position to be out there Thursday (for first-round NCAA Tournament game against either Texas A&M-Corpus Christi or Texas Southern in Fort Worth, Texas).

“He may be limited (at practice) up until then. I am confident in those other kids,” Self added of freshmen forwards KJ Adams and Zach Clemence. “They will get his reps this week. We’ll see what happens.”

KU senior forward David McCormack has had his practice time limited of late because of pain in his right foot. He had surgery to repair a broken bone in the foot last spring. McCormack also has had some discomfort in his knee this season.

“I am on a high from winning honestly. I can’t feel anything right now,” McCormack said after Saturday’s win over the Red Raiders. “There’s a little soreness because the game was banging, bruising. Besides that I’m doing well.”

Self said Sunday that “health would probably be a concern (entering postseason) just because we are a little nicked up. We think hopefully we can get that all taken care of.”
