Kansas Jayhawks’ Bill Self ‘looking forward to the new building’ after loss at Texas
Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self was asked if anything about Texas’ Frank Erwin Center stirred up any feelings “good, bad or indifferent” in him after the Jayhawks’ final appearance in the building that will be demolished after the 2021-22 season.
Texas’ new Moody Center for basketball is slated to open in the spring of 2022. The Jayhawks do figure to play Texas in that new arena, considering UT has not set a firm date for joining the SEC.
“I feel like most that probably are really looking forward to the new building,” Self, KU’s 19th year coach, said, drawing laughs from the media after Texas’ 79-76 victory over KU on Monday before a near sellout crowd of 14,688.
“I don’t dislike it at all,” Self quickly added of the Erwin Center, which opened in 1977. “But I wouldn’t say this is one of my favorite venues. I will say this about tonight: It’s probably as good a crowd as we’ve had when we play here. I thought the crowd was really good tonight.”
KU will finish 11-9 all-time in Erwin Center. The Jayhawks won eight of the 15 games played in Erwin Center with Self as KU’s coach.
The fans stormed the court after the Longhorns’ victory on Monday.
Asked if the Jayhawks had any problems getting off the court to the locker room, Self said: “No. It was fine.”
