Kansas senior guard Remy Martin, who has been bothered by a bone bruise in his right knee the last several weeks, was being held out of Tuesday’s game against Iowa State and perhaps additional games in the future, Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.

Self said on the pregame Jayhawk GameDay Live radio show that Martin, who had played limited minutes in the last four games, was to be held out indefinitely.

“We won’t have Remy. We made that decision this weekend after visiting with him,” Self said. “He’s just not far enough along that he can push off and be close to 100%. So we’re going to sit him out for a bit. Hopefully it’s a short bit, but it could be a week, it could be two. Who knows?”

Self added on his pregame radio show with Brian Hanni: “We feel we’ll give it an extended period of time, five, seven, 10 (days), two weeks. We don’t know when he can get back and be closer to 100 percent.”

Martin, KU’s 6-foot point guard, has played in the last four games after he missed two consecutive contests because of the bone bruise in his knee. He went 14 minutes in Saturday’s 80-62 blowout loss to Kentucky after logging 22 minutes against Texas Tech, 20 against Kansas State and 15 against Oklahoma — but hardly has been a factor in his appearances.

Asked what “he’s seen” from Martin lately, Self said Monday: “Not much and it’s only because of health. You guys watched him the other day. He’s playing on a leg and a half. He can’t move.”

Self on Monday was asked if there was talk of resting Martin in the near future and asked if he’d play against Iowa State, which defeated Missouri, 67-50, Saturday in a Big 12/SEC Challenge game in Ames.

“We are talking about a lot of stuff. It would probably benefit him to rest, but that’s a discussion he’ll have with doctors and trainers and everything,” Self said.

The exact injury is a bone bruise, Self said Monday.

“I am not a doctor. I assume that’s what it was before, that’s what it still is,” Self said. “He hasn’t done anything else (to further injure the knee). There’s nothing structurally that would prohibit him from being out there, but it is painful for him to all the doctors’ admission.”

Self also said Ochai Agbaji was not the only Jayhawk to test positive for COVID-19 and miss the trip. Redshirt freshman Kyle Cuffe also tested positive and is not with the team. Of Agbaji, Self said he hoped Agbaji would be out “a short number of days as opposed to extended (period of time).”
