The Kansas men’s basketball team has a new opponent for New Years Day at Allen Fieldhouse.

KU will play host to George Mason at 4 p.m. Saturday in a game streamed on ESPN+, the two programs announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Patriots are 7-5 and compete in the Atlantic-10 conference. They beat Maryland 71-66 on Nov. 17 at Maryland.

KU coach Bill Self is plenty familiar with George Mason’s coach. Kim English faced against Self as a player at Missouri from 2009-12. English, 33, was hired as the new head coach at George Mason on March 23.

George Mason lost 88-69 to KU’s Wednesday opponent, Nevada, on Nov. 23. The Patriots also won at Georgia, 80-67, on Dec. 18 and are riding a three-game winning streak.

Kansas will be the highest-ranked road opponent George Mason has played since November 2019, when the Patriots played then-No. 6 Maryland.

KU fans must purchase tickets specifically for the George Mason game, as they will not be added to accounts of season-ticket holders. Public tickets will be available beginning at noon Thursday, with prices ranging between $15 and $25.

George Mason has had three games affected by COVID, as contests against VCU and Duquesne were postponed and one against Wisconsin was canceled.

KU elected to add a game Saturday after its scheduled home contest against TCU was postponed because of COVID issues within the Horned Frogs’ program.
