Kansas football coach Lance Leipold has added some significant depth to his team’s backfield.

Sevion Morrison, a running back who played seven games for Nebraska last season, announced Sunday night that he will transfer to KU.

Morrison took an official visit to KU over the weekend.

“The No. 1 thing that stood out to me was Coach Leipold,” Morrison told Jon Kirby of JayhawkSlant.com. “He’s just very genuine. He’s very transparent with everything.”

Morrison — a 6-foot, 210-pound back from Tulsa, Oklahoma — was a highly ranked recruit out of high school. Rivals rated him as a four-star prospect in the class of 2020 and also as the nation’s 233rd-best player and 14th-best running back.

After not playing for Nebraska in 2020, Morrison rushed 30 times for 116 yards with three touchdowns this season as a redshirt freshman.

In high school, he broke the school record for rushing yards at Edison, topping the previous mark set by Spencer Tillman. He was the state of Oklahoma’s leading rusher his junior season and originally picked Nebraska over more than 20 other offers that included Baylor, Arkansas and Wisconsin.

“Towards the end of the season they started to turn it around,” Morrison told JayhawkSlant, when talking about KU. “I paid attention to that second half, that Texas game, that OU game and I started noticing. I’m like, ‘OK, Kansas has a chance.’

“And then now with that new culture and coaching staff, I saw what they did back in Buffalo with (running back) Jaret Patterson and the other running back they had. I know if they have those two backs such as me and Devin Neal, they can do the same thing.”

This is the second high-profile Big Ten transfer KU has picked up in the last week, as Leipold also landed Michigan State cornerback Kalon Gervin on Friday. Gervin had previously committed to Wisconsin in October.

Morrison told JayhawkSlant he planned to enroll at KU in January.
