Bill Self wasn’t able to attend in person, or even watch on TV, last Saturday’s Kansas football victory over Texas.

Self, KU’s 19th-year men’s basketball coach, had work obligations over the weekend.

Still, he managed to keep track of the score of the Jayhawks’ 57-55 overtime victory over the Longhorns in Austin, Texas.

“Kurtis (Townsend, KU hoops assistant) and I didn’t get a chance to watch a play,” Self said. “We were on the road recruiting (in Phoenix). We were checking our phones all the time. We didn’t have great reception in the gym we were in.

“That was pretty special. If you’re going to beat somebody, it might as well be Texas.” Self said on his Hawk Talk radio show.

Of the football game, Self noted: “Granted we controlled the game start to finish. Of course they (Longhorns) obviously tied it up late. Guys hung in there and coach (Lance Leipold) did what he’s supposed to do. He made a hard decision.”

Self was referring to Leipold electing to go for two after a touchdown in overtime and KU down 56-55. Leipold could have settled for an extra point that, if converted, would have sent the game to a second OT. Instead, quarterback Jalon Daniels completed a conversion pass to Jared Casey, sealing the upset.

“It was aggressive. I’m sure that will do as much as anything to give players confidence they know coach has their back. I was really happy the way it turned out. It was great,” Self said.

Self has had several conversations with first-year KU football coach Leipold this school year. Not all of those conversations have been on campus.

“He is my next-door neighbor,” Self said. “He bought the house right next door to me. Brad Sanders (former KU guard) and his family lived there before. They are great.”

Self added, jokingly: “We have to have somebody in between our house and the Morningstars (former KU guard Roger and wife Linda), without question, with Roger. It’s nice there’s a buffer between Roger now. That’s a positive.”
