About Michigan State: MSU is 4-6 in the Champions Classic. The Spartans have lost four of their last five in the event. The Spartans beat Duke, 75-69, in last year’s Champions Classic. That game was played on Dec. 1, 2020, in Durham, North Carolina because of the pandemic. … The Spartans were picked to finish sixth of 14 teams in the Big Ten’s preseason men’s basketball media poll. There is no official poll put out by the conference. … The Spartans return nine letterwinners from last year’s team that finished 15-13 overall and 9-11 in the Big Ten and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd-straight season, the second-longest active streak in Division I. Kansas has the longest streak at 31, an NCAA record. … Michigan State won both of its exhibition games, first topping Ferris State, 92-58, on Oct. 27, then upending Grand Valley State, 83-60, on Nov. 4. Both games were played in East Lansing, Michigan. Freshman guard Max Christie averaged 15.5 points on 57.9% shooting and 3.5 rebounds in the two games. Senior forward Gabe Brown averaged 15.0 points on 58.8% shooting and 5.0 rebounds. … MSU won five of its last seven regular season games a year ago, including three against teams ranked in the AP top five. … Tom Izzo is 643-254 in 26 seasons at Michigan State.
