Gradey Dick, the former Collegiate hoops star now at Sunrise, gets call from KU, Self

Wichita basketball star Gradey Dick, a 6-6 junior-to-be now at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas, is feeling the full-court press of recruiting now.

Dick, who announced that he is transferring to Sunrise this spring, told The Star that he heard from Kansas Jayhawks coaches via text at 12:01 a.m. Monday, the first day NCAA coaches could begin contacting recruits from the class of 2022.

KU coach Bill Self then called to speak with Dick directly at 7 p.m. Monday.

“Since I already had the (scholarship) offer (made in June 2019) it was just to touch base and show their interest in me because this is the first day that they can contact me,” Dick told Zagsblog.com. “It was just to build that relationship and keep building that.”

Dick, who also heard from Wichita State and Kansas State Monday, has some familiarity with the KU program.

“Obviously, just being from around here and watching them, I’ve had siblings go there, so I already had that little connection like that,” Dick said. “I play for a summer team (KC Run GMC) that has some guys that went there, so it’s about those relationships I already have.”

Dick told Zagsblog.com he was offered scholarships by Texas A&M and Northwestern Monday. The list of additional schools whose coaches contacted him Monday was immense:

Wichita State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Northwestern, Virginia, , Minnesota, North Carolina, Marquette, Baylor, Illinois, Florida, Texas A&M, BYU, Notre Dame, Texas, Xavier, Alabama and Purdue.

“I’m just taking everything in,” said Dick, who is ranked No. 32 in the recruiting class of 2022 by Rivals.com. “I’m 100 percent open with all the recruiting, hearing from all the schools right now.

“I wouldn’t say I have a list (of favorite schools). I’m just kind of enjoying it.”
