KU basketball players could be on campus July 6, coach Self says, after lengthy absence
Kansas’ basketball players are looking to return to campus July 6 for voluntary summer workouts as allowed by the Big 12 Conference, coach Bill Self said Monday.
“Yes, that’s what we’re thinking,” Self said Monday after the Big 12 issued updated return-to-campus guidelines that included the July 6 date for basketball.
Normally the players would be returning to campus this week for summer school and eight hours of supervised workouts as well as unsupervised pick-up games. However, only voluntary workouts will be allowed this summer with summer school classes available online only.
The Jayhawk players left for their hometowns after the season ended March 12 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All team activities, including practices, meetings and organized gatherings, were suspended in response to the campus’ closing due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Big 12 will allow voluntary on-campus football workouts starting June 15 and other fall sports on July 1. Men’s and women’s basketball voluntary workouts may beginning July 6 and all other sports July 15.
Self’s two sessions of summer camp and his team camp, set for June, have been canceled. It is possible a camp of some kind could be held later in the summer if coronavirus regulations ease.
“Not as of now. Looking at possibly something in August. Don’t know (at this time),” Self said in a text message to The Star, which asked about possible summer camps being held down the line.
Jossell to wear jersey No. 4
Lattrell Jossell, a 6-foot point guard from Central High in Keller, Texas, will wear jersey No. 4 his freshman season at KU.
“I chose that number because I’ve had it since I was in seventh grade and it has always been my favorite number,” he told kuathletics.com.
Jossell, who is originally from Chicago, played in just four games his senior season because of an ankle injury. He averaged 11.8 points and 1.5 steals per game. He also made five three pointers.
He averaged 13.2 points per game as a freshman at Central, 13.8 points his sophomore year and 18.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game his junior season in 2018-19. For his career, he shot 36.6 percent from three-point range.
He will be the 10th KU player to wear number 4, which most recently belonged to Isaiah Moss, who wore it in 2019-20.
KU recruiting football/hoops player
KU is recruiting Keon Coleman, a 6-4 senior-to-be guard out of Opelousas Catholic in Louisiana, as a two-sport athlete, he told Jayhawkslant.com.
Coleman, a wide receiver, has offers in football from KU, Louisville, Baylor, Florida State, Miami, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan State and several others. In basketball he has earned offers from Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette, Jayhawkslant.com reported.
“Coach Miles (Les, football) said I can make an impact on the football team and coach Self said I could do the same for basketball,” Coleman, a three-star football player who is unranked in basketball, said to Jayhawkslant.com. “They had a lot of coaches on the (recent Zoom) call. It shows that they want me for both sports,” he added. “I like them a lot. It’s a good opportunity. They are all good people. Coach Miles was telling me he wants to help me get that Heisman.”
