KU’s Devon Dotson regarded as first-round pick in 2020 NBA Draft by CBSsports.com
Former University of Kansas point guard Devon Dotson will be selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft, according to the updated projections from CBSsports.com.
Dotson, a 6-foot-2 first-team all-Big 12 selection out of Charlotte, North Carolina, will be the 29th overall pick, reporter Kyle Boone.
“Devon Dotson’s not the most flashy guard in any one particular area, but he’s good at everything and can make things happen with his speed and ability to get downhill,” wrote Boone, noting Dotson would be a nice fit with the Los Angeles Lakers. The exact draft order has not been announced, as the current NBA season is yet to be completed.
“So for a Lakers team looking to supplement its depth at the position, he’d be a nice addition with real upside if his three-point shot comes around,” Boone explained.
Former KU center Udoka Azubuike was not projected to be a first-round pick by CBSsports.com. The website has not yet made second-round projections.
Meanwhile, Azubuike was listed No. 31 overall (first pick second round) and Dotson No. 32 in ESPN.com’s latest mock draft. Dotson is listed No 29 overall and Azubuike No. 30 in the latest mock draft from NBCsports.com. That makes them both first-rounders, according to NBC.
There will be 30 picks in each of the two rounds in the draft, originally slated for June 25 in New York. With the NBA season expected to resume at some point this summer, the date of the draft almost certainly will be pushed to August or September.
CBSsports.com has former Memphis big man James Wiseman listed as the overall No. 1 pick in the 2020 Draft, while ESPN.com and NBCsports.com currently have former Georgia wing Anthony Edwards rated No. 1. Wiseman played in just three games during his freshman season at Memphis because of an NCAA issue. Edwards averaged 19.1 points a game for Georgia.
Black won’t return to Maccabi
Former Kansas power forward Tarik Black will not return to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv next season, the professional basketball team, which is based in Israel, has announced.
Black, 28, who played for KU during the 2013-14 season after transferring from Memphis, averaged 9.1 points and 4.8 rebounds for Maccabi during the 2019-20 Euroleague season cut short because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In 2018-19, he averaged 11.0 points and 5.4 rebounds a game for the Israeli League’s championship team.
“The club wishes to thank the big man for his great time in yellow&blue, great moments and last year’s championship. Good luck!” the team said on its website.
The 6-9, 250-pound Black said in reply on the website: “I want to thank the owners, management, coaching staff, teammates and the fans for a great time in a great city. I’m grateful for my experience playing with Maccabi but I have decided to take some time for my family. This was a personal decision that was in my family’s best interest. I appreciate all the support from the club and I will always cherish my time in Tel Aviv. Yalla Maccabi!”
Black averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds a game in his graduate transfer season at KU in 2013-14. He started 15 games and averaged 13.5 minutes per game for 25-10 KU. The Jayhawks won the Big 12 regular-season title and went 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament.
An undrafted free agent in 2014, Black played for the Houaton Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers in the 2014-15 season. In 2015-16, he played for both the Lakers and the squad’s G League affiliate in L.A. He was with the Lakers in 2016-17 and Rockets in 2017-18 before heading overseas.
Muscadin to wear No. 35 at KU
Gethro Muscadin, a 6-10 center from Aspire Academy in Louisville, Kentucky, will wear jersey No. 35 for his freshman season at KU, it was announced at KUathletics.com.
Muscadin, who averaged 12.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks a game in his senior season of high school, said he has “been wearing No. 35 for the past couple years and Kevin Durant is one of my favorite players. I love his game.”
Muscadin played his sophomore and junior seasons at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas (near Wichita) after spending his freshman year at Life Prep Academy in Wichita. He’s originally from Haiti.
Udoka Azubuike wore No. 35 at KU a year ago. Muscadin, rated No. 136 in the recruiting class of 2020 by Rivals.com, will be the eighth KU player to wear No. 35. Others: Jerod Haase (1995-97), Calvin Thompson (1983-86), Bob Frederick (1960-62), Calvin Thompson (1983-86), David Magley (1979-82), Rodger Bohenstiehl (1966-68) and Monte Johnson (1957-59).
