Report card
Offense: B. Sometimes it was a struggle, and KU didn’t put up big points. But sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart was able to be efficient on short throws, throwing for 226 yards and two TDs with one interception.
Defense: A. It came against Central Michigan, but this was a promising performance, especially in the fourth quarter. The KU defense didn’t flinch in the final minutes.
Special teams: B. Sophomore kicker Matthew Wyman missed a 35-yard field goal, but punter Trevor Pardula flipped the field a number of times and pinned Central Michigan deep repeatedly.
Coaching: B. It could have been cleaner, but the Jayhawks got a much-needed win. The offensive coaching staff smartly put quarterback Montell Cozart in situations where he could succeed.
Player of the game: KU linebacker Jake Love. Really, the honor could go to the entire KU defense, which limited Central Michigan to 279 total yards. But Love came up huge during the fourth quarter, finishing with four tackles for loss.
Reason to hope: The KU defense bounced back from a disappointing performance at Duke. Senior linebacker Ben Heeney forced a fumble, and the Jayhawks got some heat on the quarterback.
Reason to mope: Now the Big 12 season begins. The Jayhawks are just 1-26 in the Big 12 over the last three years.
Looking ahead: KU will face Texas on Saturday in its Big 12 opener at Memorial Stadium.
O-line missing two
Kansas played without starting right guard Mike Smithburg and starting right tackle Damon Martin in its 24-10 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday.
Smithburg underwent an appendectomy on Wednesday, while Martin missed the game because of an undisclosed illness. Junior Bryan Peters started at right tackle, while junior college transfer Larry Mazyck started at right tackle.
KU coach Charlie Weis said he hoped both players could be back Saturday against Texas, though the recovery time for the appendectomy is expected to be seven to 10 days. After the game, Weis mentioned that, while he was the offensive coordinator with the Chiefs, quarterback Matt Cassel had the same procedure and returned in seven days.
“He’ll probably be cleared sometime in the middle to end of (this week),” Weis said of Smithburg. “So I think there’s a possibility.”
Praise for Love
Weis said junior linebacker Jake Love was the only player he singled out during his postgame talk in the locker room. Love finished with a sack and four tackles for loss — including two on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter.
“I think they ran the same play back to back,” Love said. “Luckily enough, I made a good read.”
