A look at Kansas State's unofficial spring depth chart
Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder doesn’t release a depth chart at any point during spring practices, but it’s possible for media and fans to piece one together today.
The Wildcats held their annual spring game in front of nearly 15,000 fans on Saturday. The players that opened with the purple team are currently starters. The players that opened on the white team are currently backups. Some players were held out of the game due to injury, and some players helped/hurt their cause by the way they performed in a public setting, so there is still guesswork involved.
For example, Joe Hubener was the third quarterback to see action. But he opened the game with the purple team. Does that mean he was the backup behind Jesse Ertz? Or did that title belong to Alex Delton, whom opened the game on the white team? And did the way Hubener played (completing 21 of 25 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns) move him up the depth chart?
A similar question could be asked of Justin Silmon. He was the team’s best running back on Saturday, but he was also the third running back on the field.
It’s a subjective process. And much could change between now and the season-opener, especially with new players on the way. Still, it is possible to project a reasonably accurate post-spring depth chart.
