St. James Academy senior quarterback Sammy Wheeler commits to Kansas State

The roots trace back to Manhattan in more ways than one.

St. James Academy senior Sammy Wheeler is the son of one former Kansas State football player and the nephew of another. He was born in Manhattan.

He plans to soon spend his college years there, too.

Wheeler, a quarterback prospect, committed to Kansas State on Wednesday evening, making an announcement on Twitter.

The offer came Saturday. He didn’t need long to plan his future around it.

“I’ve always been a fan, and it’s always been my dream to play there,” Wheeler said. “It’s really exciting.”

Wheeler is the son of Sean Wheeler and the nephew of Michael Wheeler. Both played wide receiver at Kansas State.

Sammy Wheeler is best known for his athleticism. He primarily played wide receiver for St. James Academy as a junior last season. He will move to quarterback for his senior year, a position he has played since fifth grade.

“I was ready to get my recruiting out of the way because I don’t want it to be a distraction in my senior year,” Wheeler said. “We’re joining the (Eastern Kansas League) this year, so it’s going to be tough competition. I’m looking forward to it.”
