Neosho County forward Freddie McSwain picks Indiana over Kansas State
Neosho County forward Freddie McSwain will play basketball at Indiana next season.
McSwain, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound sophomore with two years of college eligibility remaining, chose the Hoosiers over Kansas State in a ceremony that was streamed on the internet from Neosho’s gym in Chanute on Sunday.
McSwain placed an Indiana hat on his head to commemorate the decision. Initially, it appeared as though McSwain might choose K-State, as he grabbed a K-State hat and said nice words about the Wildcats. But it wasn’t to be.
“I want to thank Kansas State for everything,” McSwain said, “but I am choosing Indiana.”
McSwain was Bruce Weber’s top target to fill K-State’s lone remaining scholarship for the 2016-17 basketball season. McSwain visited Manhattan twice in the past month on recruiting trips. But he visited Indiana last week, and the Hoosiers made a lasting impression. He figures to play a mixture of small forward and power forward in the Big Ten.
Weber will now turn his attention to other recruits. With four incoming freshmen — guard Cartier Diarra, small forwards Xavier Sneed and Brian Patrick, and center James Love — already signed, he may continue to look for an older addition and recruit the junior-college ranks or recruit a graduate transfer.
